This is a post by moms for moms. I asked my Facebook friends for their recommendations for sunscreen, preferably for at the pool and on the children. Here's what was recommended:
I got a couple references to Environmental Working Group (ewg.org) which has a HUGE list of sunscreens that have been tested for effectiveness and irritating chemicals. I like that they include a lot of smaller brands.
In no particular order, here are some specific brands called out by some local moms.
-Mustella Bebe - although pricey, this is rated highly by EWG
-Blue Lizard - sold at Harris Teeter in the Raleigh area.
-California Baby - liquid and stick form available. I know I've seen this at Target.
-Babyganics - available at Target, among other stores in the area.
-Badger Natural Sunscreen
-Cerave
-Babo Botanicals
-Protect Broad Spectrum SPF Sunscreen by Beautycounter
Among some more common brand recommendations included Coppertone Baby, Neutrogena Baby, and Banana Boat Baby, available at most grocery stores and pharmacies.
Some children may be more sensitive to ingredients than others. If you're particularly concerned about certain chemicals. Check out this SafeMama Safer Sunscreen Cheat Sheet.
Whichever sunscreen you choose, be sure to follow the recommended amount, age limit, and re dosage rate. We need to keep that baby soft skin safe from the harsh rays of the sun, but don't let that stop you from enjoying the pool!
